Gerard Fabiano Takes Grand Prix Montreal 3-17-2014

It was an exciting weekend as the Grand Prix Montreal drew in a large crowd of over 1,600 players! Popularity is clearly on the rise following the even larger Grand Prix Richmond which was home to more than 5,000 competitors. It’s worth noting that Beuno Aires hosted a Grand Prix this same weekend, speaking volumes to the large numbers in attendance.

The formats of Grand Prix Montreal included Sealed Deck play down to the top competitors remaining playing a Limited Draft. Out of the 170 remaining players Gerard Fabiano managed to climb his way to the top finishing the final match 2-1. We got to see a nice mix of decks make it to the Top 8 the only similar decks played were White/Red Aggression with others coming in with Green/Black and Black/Blue.

Gerard Fabio won the evening with his White/Red Aggression deck using the large amount of white cards available to buff his creatures in numbers and abilities. This type of white spell buff can be seen in Phalanx Leader, Ornitharch, Celestial Archon, Battlewise Valor as well as a number of other spells. Other noted mechanics included creatures with Heroic, giving each creature with it their own unique ability. This can make it hard for opponents to hammer down a certain strategy since the creatures themselves can dish out personal abilities. Five of the fourteen creatures included had this ability. The rest of the spells in this deck were mainly white control and red burn to keep the opponents creatures under control. With right play and timing Gerard Fabio was able to take the Champion Spot in the Grand Prix Montreal. You can view his tournament limited deck below.
