Featured Decklist GP Richmond 3-13-2014

It has been circulating around that most of the Top 8 decks from the Grand Prix in Richmond were “Pod” based decks, which is why it was nice to see some variety come from Vipin Chackonal with the second place winning deck. To touch on Pod based decks we refer to the card Birthing Pod. Birthing Pod allows players at the cost of mana or health points to search through their deck to pull out a creature and place it onto the battlefield. This is good two fold since the card also allows you to pull out a stronger creature than you already had. Giving these two points its easy to see why Pod decks are popular. The low mana cost allows you to play Birthing Pod early at the cost of health or allows you to make a strategic creature pull to seal games.

The second place “Affinity” deck on the other hand dealt mainly in Artifacts and was put together by Vipin Chackonal. In modern play its popular to see the Metalcraft mechanic get abused in deadly combination with Artifact heavy decks. Metalcraft typically requires a player to have 3 or more artifacts on the field in order to take advantage of a particular spell. Here we see 11 cards, Etched Champion, Mox Opal and Galvanic Blast using this mechanic. The cards to watch out for in this deck are Thoughtcasts. Thoughtcasts give us an Affinity mechanic typically requiring a certain amount of the same type of creature or card on the field and allows the player to draw cards. In a mainly all artifact deck, this is not hard to do. Along with a slew of creature buff spells mainly affecting artifacts including Cranial Plating and Steel Overseer this deck has both the survivability and draw power to win games. Below you will find Vipin Chackonals second place winning Affinity deck.
