Top 25 and Jace vs. Vraska Foil Update 3-12-2014

The Magic Top 25 was updated this past week to include recent tournaments and events. The most notable of events was without a doubt the Grand Prix in Richmond with a record turnout of over 4,300 players. Even in all the popularity at least 3 professional players found themselves in the Top 8 of GP Richmond. This speaks to the talent of professional players and there ability to overcome great numbers in competitive play. As for changes in the ladder we didn’t really see much movement in the Top 8 of the 25 best players. Changes came around the 11th place spot where Alexander Hayne moved out Standislav Cifka. The top players remained at their current spots with Jeremy Dezani holding on to first place with Reid Duke Owen, Turtenwald, Ben Stark and Tom Martell trying to close in.

Wizards also gave us a mini update on the Jace vs. Vraska Duel Deck. There was a custom foiling style mentioned when the Duel Deck was first talked about, today we get a look at the white layer or “shiny” party of the foil cards. Below you can see side by side comparisons of the original card next to its white layer companion. Duel Decks, Jace vs. Vraska is set to hit store shelves on 3/14/2014 look for it at your local TCG shop or you can click the image and use the amazon link to order if online.

Brian Liu Takes Grand Prix Richmond 3-9-2014

The Grand Prix in Richmond comes to a close with one of the largest player turnouts in Grand Prix history. The Richmond Grand Prix was host to 4,300 players from all around filling the reserved space in addition to needing more event halls to host players. This was a Modern Format tournament with a slew of different decks finding there way into the top 16 however that spectrum was narrowed in the end with the Top 8 consisting of 4 similar pod style decks. As such was the winning deck of the weekend, Brian Liu’s “Kiki pod” deck played popular combinations of blue/white/red/green cards to seal the win. Noted cards in these “Pod” decks typically include Birds of Paradise, Reveillark, Melira, Sylvak Outcast and of course, Birthing Pod. What differs from Brian Liu’s deck was the addition of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. Liu was the only player in the Top 8 to not play a Melira, Sylvak Outcast in a pod deck and instead use Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. With a few other slight modifications such as not including Abrupt Decay or Reveillark, Brian Liu seems to have made the perfect changes to win the Champion Spot.

Below you will be able to find Brian Liu’s Winning Deck of the Grand Prix in Richmond!

Modern Event Deck in the Works 3-7-2014

A bit of rumor related news was slightly confirmed today on twitter by Aaron Forsythe after the picture below surfaced online. The photo depicted someone holding a sealed package of what appeared to be a Modern Format event deck listing details and contents on the back of the box. Cards listed included Elspeth Knight Errant, Hero of Bladehold, Honor of the Pure and Intangible Virtue as well as mention of token type cards in the deck. Aaron Forsythe commented on twitter that “… The picture of the Modern Event Deck floating around is a pre-production mock up and is not completely accurate to what’s final..” Notice he didn’t say the deck wasn’t happening simply that it wasn’t final. Other contents listed on the back is as follows: Pre-Constructed 60 Card Deck, 15 card sideboard, strategy guide, Spindown Life Counter, 80 Exclusive card sleeves, 5 double-sided tokens and deck box.

It would be fantastic to see Wizards bring us more event decks tuned for different formats of play. While again this just a semi-confirmed rumor we will still follow closely and provide updates as they come out. The photo of the pre-production deck can be viewed below.

Grand Prix Melbourne Results 3-2-2014

With the Grand Prix in Melbourne complete, we tip our hats to Nam Sung-Wook for claiming the top spot. Adding to the excitement it was noted that Sung-Wook was the first South Korean to win a Grand Prix Magic: The Gathering Event! Sung-Wook knocked out previous Top 8 competitors with his Standard format Mono-Black deck. Looking through the cards we see the popular Pack Rat and Mutavault, pretty standard for this type of play, and spells that round his deck giving him additional card draw and opponent hand control. To help sustain the deck we see cards such as Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Devour Flesh which both allow the player to gain life and possibly damage the opponent. The deck is simple and concise which we tend to see in the Standard format of play. What was interested to see was the amount of similar decks in the Top 8 mainly running the same White Blue Black combination of cards. Check back for more updates and Thanks again! You can view Nam Sung-Wook’s Mono-Black deck below.

Lands (26)

  • 4 Mutavault
  • 16 Swamp
  • 4 Temple of Deceit
  • 2 Watery Gravet

Creatures (16)

  • 4 Desecration Demon
  • 4 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
  • 4 Nightveil Specter

Game Day and Pro Tour Decklist 3-1-2014

Posted above is The Vanquisher which you get for besting Battle the Horde at the Born of the Gods Game Day March 1st-2nd 2014. The Vanquisher is the Hero card for part 6 of The Heroes Path. As a reminder those wishing to attend a Game Day event may do so at your local game store. Participation in the Standard tournament requires a 60 card minimum standard deck from Return to Ravnica – Born of the Gods.

Also as an update today we have the number 2 decklist from the Pro Tour Born of the Gods Top 8. In contrast to the Red – White – Blue deck put together by Shaun McLaren, Jacob Wilsons White – Green – Black deck centered mainly around creature ramp up with minor spell assistance. Looking at the creatures we see a nice variety of board control, mana ramp up and creature gain. In particular we see Wilson playing Melira, Sylvok Outcast which just about eliminates poison/infect damage and saves his creature from reduced power and defense. Cards such as Reveillark and Eternal witness along with a few others give the player a great opportunity to keep creatures on the board or return them from the graveyard and keep the combos running. Posted Below is Jacob Wilsons Number 2 Born of the Gods Pro Tour Valencia Deck.

Born of the Gods Pro Tour Featured Decklist 2-28-2014

Today we get to feature the Born of the Gods Pro Tour number one deck by Shaun McLaren. This Red / White / Blue combination of cards comes in the flavor of heavy spell usage, with the best of each color. We get to see popular red burn spells such as Lightning Bolt, staple blue counter like Mana Leak and Remand as well as Lightning Helix and Path to Exile white control that really speak for themselves in play. As is the case with spell centered decks , the creatures we see are few and typically go to assist the spell usage. Snapcaster Mage and Vendilion Clique can both be played as interrupts, lending to speed of play. On top of that Snapcaster Mage will give a chosen spell flashback, While Vendilion Clique helps control your opponents hand. Below you will be able to see the full number one Decklist for the Born of the Gods Pro Tour Valencia.

The biggest movement was seen in Owen Turenwald moving a whopping 9 places in the Top and finding a comfortable seat in 3rd place. It’s worth nothing that the most recent Pro Tour was host to every single player in the Top 25. Thanks!

Pro Tour Born of the Gods Update 2-24-2014

With the Pro Tour Born of the Gods now complete we tip our hats to Canadian Shaun McLaren for winning the number 1 spot. The final Top 8 matchup came between McLaren (W/U/R) and Jacob Wilson (Bl/G/W). Mclaren is a 25 year old magic player who primary plays Magic: The Gathering: Online and had his first entry into a modern pro tour. It was a heated match up as the games could have gone either way, McLaren was actually down 2 game to 1 in the start. The noted plays of the evening seemed to include McLarens use of Ajani Vengeant to land sweep Wilson, and the use of control cards against Wilsons ramp up. Tomorrow we will feature a deck from one of these two players.

In a smaller note Wizards has trademarked ‘Dragons Of Tarkir’ and ‘Khans Of Tarkir’ as well as obtained the respected domains. While we hope this could be a hint at new card sets , Wizards has a slew of other brands that could include these phrases. We will update this as we get more information. Thanks again and check back!

Featured Decklist Born of the Gods Pro Tour 2-23-2014

This decklist comes right out of the Born of the Gods Pro Tour as the first official event comes to close. We were able to see a wide variety of decks as wizards released to us the decklists of players scoring more then 18 Points in the 10 rounds Modern play. Today we feature a deck put together by Devon O’Donnell. We always like to see decks that arent always a part of typical flow and today we have a deck that is just that. While there inst a name out for the deck, it mainly features artifact play with heavy emphasis on the Metalcraft mechanic. Sprinkled in are a Red spell or two to handle early game creatures and artifacts with huge attack bonuses that can move around. Similar to the styles of Sliver play, the artifacts in this deck all work off each other in some way either giving bonuses to attack and defense or using artifacts as mana. O’Donnell was only one of few players to try an “All Artifact” Deck. Check it out below!

Grand Prix Paris Results Update 2-22-2014

In a small update , Wizards has released a statement regarding the decision to change the standings of the Grand Prix in Paris. The statement came in two parts as Wizards also needed to make a ruling in a match involving Jurado Gibert. Gilbert was disqualified after a Game Rules Violation on turn 15 of his match up and therefore had to give his 8th place spot to Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa who came in 9th.

The bigger decision of the night was during the final match up in which Javier Dominguez misplayed a Brainstorm and only replaced one of the required two cards. The event was caught on camera and widely talked about in on media sites regarding the issue. The difference here in cases is that nobody noticed Dominguez misplay the Brainstorm during the match. It was only after watching the footage that it was caught. Head judge Riccardo Tessitori and the team investing the issue have ruled the infraction accidental. Dominguez will only receive a mark on his record for the misplay. As for the standings of the tournament, Dominguez still comes out with the champion spot. The only changes came as mentioned earlier to the 8th place position. Thanks again and check back for updates!

Featured Decklist Grand Prix Top 8 2-20-2014

Today we are featuring the currently number 2 Legacy deck from the Grand Prix Paris 2014. Our deck today was put together by Maxime Gilles who played for the champion spot against Javier Dominguez. Similar to Dominguez, Gilles opted to leave out the popular True-Name Nemesis as well and combat it with additional counter. In particular here we see Red Elemental Blast used to accomplish just that counter. Here is Maxime Gilles U/W/R 2nd place deck.

Creatures (4)

  • 2 Snapcaster Mage
  • 2 Vendilion Clique

Lands (22)

  • 3 Arid Mesa
  • 4 Flooded Strand
  • 4 Island/li>
  • 1 Karakas
  • 2 Plains
  • 3 Scalding Tarn
  • 3 Tundra
  • 2 Volcanic Island

In a related note, Wizards has yet to release a final statement on the decision regarding the Grand Prix Paris 2014 results. The situation involved misplay on a Brainstorm in which Javier Dominguez did not completely replace the required cards on his deck. Dominguez went on to win the champion spot in the Paris Grand Prix.

Grand Prix Paris Results Under Examination 2-17-2014

As an update to yesterdays post which can be viewed here, we have a bit of drama out of the Grand Prix in Paris where Javier Dominguez and Maxime Gilleste battled it out in the Top 8. The speculated issue was in the final matchup where Javier Dominguez played a Brainstorm (Allows you to draw 3 cards and replace 2 of the 3 on the deck) and after some though, only replaced one card and not the second. There are multiple amounts of footage from the Grand Pix matchup that show this particular event happen as well as a wide thread going on reddit discussing the topic. The only comment we have from Wizards is stated on their site:

“Results from Grand Prix Paris are under re-examination. Update to follow.”

We will follow this event closely and give an update when available.

Grand Prix Paris Results and Decklist 2-16-2014

In some Legacy related news out of the Grand Prix in Paris, Javier Dominguez climbed his way through the Top 8 with U-Bl-G Delver to come out GP Champ. One of the noted features of Dominguez’s Delver was the option to remove the popular True-Name Nemesis and instead to counter it when facing related decks. In the end it came down to Dominguez and Maxime Gilleste. Despite not having an undefeated run like his opponent in the final matchup, this small change in Dominguez’s Deck clearly made all the difference. In the end Dominguez delivered an impressive 8-1 streak to secure his spot in the Top 8 and Champion of Grand Prix Paris. You can view his Decklist below.
